For this week’s ROM of the Week, check out AICP ROM, available for SM-N9005, T-Mobile SM-N900T, Sprint SM-N900P, and Canadian SM-N900W8.  (Sorry, DOES NOT WORK WITH SAFESTRAP!)

Based on latest Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, AICP brings you the latest and best of pure Google to your Galaxy Note 3. This is an AOSP ROM (What is AOSP?) so you will lose all of your Samsung TouchWiz features.

This ROM literally turns your Note 3 into a Note 4 as the speed and performance is ridiculously fast!  I was able to score near 46,000 on Antutu, which is about the same as Note 4 on KitKat.   Now that’s without any overclocking.  With a custom kernel and overclocking, you should be able to easily go near 50,000.

Apart from benchmarks, the AICP runs super fast and apps/games are now zippier than ever.  And it doesn’t end there either, you will be able to fully customize your phone with its AICP Extras in Settings which include stuff like Gesture Anywhere, App Circle Bar, Ad blocker, custom system animations, boot animations, and a ton more.

Looking to turn your Note 3 into a Note 4?  Look nowhere further than Note 4 Port Evolution ROM by XDA user Kbythwood!

Based on Android 4.4.4 TouchWiz, Note 4 Port Evolution ROM brings you Note 4 system UI and features to your Note 3, it will work on the AT&T Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900A, T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900T, Canadian SM-N900W8, and (should work, although not tested) international SM-N9005.

Out of the box, the Note 4 Port Evolution ROM will bring you everything from Note 4, all except features that requires Note 4’s new hardware such as fingerprint/UV/heart sensor.  Otherwise, this ROM pretty much turns your Note 3 into a Note 4 minus the higher 1440P resolution (who needs it anyways, it drains way too much battery).

If you don’t care for Note 4’s new Gear VR capability then this ROM will turn your phone into Note 4 without having to break your damn wallet!   With this ROM, you will be able to easily inherit Note 4’s super capabilities like floating multi-windows (by dragging  your finger from corner, see video for demo), Ultra Power Saving Mode, Download Booster, and much much more.

Also, this ROM comes with a modded Note 4 launcher that is even faster than the real Note 4 stock launcher and performance/battery life is excellent.  For T-Mobile/international version, you will also be able to overclock easily to 2.726Ghz thanks to Lean kernel and get your performance up to par with a Note 4 (near 46,000 on Antutu).

Overall, this is another way to prove to you that rooting and custom ROMs make your older phone better and just as good as newer phones like the Note 4.  So, if you have a model that supports it, give it a go this week(end) and do let me know how much you like it!

We recommend using latest version of TWRP recovery to install this ROM, if you don’t have it, use Flashify app and grab latest version of TWRP recovery for your Note 3 model here.

To install, reboot into recovery, make backup ROM, Wipe->Adanced wipe system/cache/data/dalvik cache, install ROM, and reboot.  See our TWRP failproof method on how to install this ROM.

For AT&T Note 3, installation is same but using SafeStrap (See how to install ROMs using SafeStrap here and use Stock ROM SLOT!!!), then you do need to put the phone in ODIN download mode and install APBLCP package after installing ROM!!! (See latter part of video for step-by-step tutorial!)

Many of you are still waiting for stock Android 5.0 Lollipop firmware on your Galaxy Note 3 but the international versions of Note 3 already have received them including the SM-N900 and SM-N9005.

For SM-N9005, there’s already a slew of great custom Lollipop ROMs to choose from, I recommend the Alliance ROM.  For SM-N900 users, you may want to hold off another week or two as ROM developers are still getting their stuff together, not too many ROMs can be installed straight from CWM or TWRP Recovery, most requiring you to ODIN the Lollipop firmware.

Of course, you can help yourself and flash stock Lollipop firmware on your SM-N900, the Russian version gives you pretty good Lollipop experience with almost zero bloatware.  The biggest change with Lollipop?  Yes, you get all of the Lollipop performance enhancements (getting near 45,000 on Antutu with no overclocking) along with Note 4’s new multi-window feature where you can resize any app to make it a floating window.

Overall, it looks like a very promising week for the Note 3, especially considering Samsung has added Note 4 features to the Note 3 software.  If you don’t want to wait, definitely take the plunge and try flashing the Russian version if you have a SM-N900!

To install, unzip the stock firmware, put your phone into download mode, choose AP, then select the unzipped firmware tar.md5 file and hit “Start”.   (Don’t know how to do this?  See our unroot guide.)

Once done, you can re-root and re-install CWM or TWRP recovery. (I was having trouble with TWRP so try CWM instead for rooting)

Overclocking has always been one of the biggest reasons to root Android devices including the Note 3.  It can give you full control over the CPU, allowing you to get more juice out of it.  And a lot of people are worried that their CPU will burn up into thin air but on the contrary, mobile CPU processors are different from regular computer processors in that they have been designed to not burn up in case things get hot.

What if I blow up my CPU?

That said, if you are worried about burning out your CPU from too much overclocking, I don’t believe that is physically possible, your CPU will simply shut down or make your phone reboot.  Unlike desktop processors, these mobile processors have been designed so users can abuse the hell out of them.  I’ve overclocked more than 50+ Android devices (and have them run as daily driver) to the maximum for the last 4 years, I have yet to seen a failed CPU from it.

So, do you want to make your Note 3 run fast as a Note 4?  First, the Qualcomm 800 processor on the Note 3 is actually a really good processor for that as it allows stable overclocking to 2.726Ghz, that is actually slightly faster than stock Note 4 frequency of 2.649Ghz.  (On the other hand, Note 4’s Qualcomm 805 processor can overclock to around 2.9Ghz but not beyond that with stability.)

Overclock Snapdragon 800 to match Snapdragon 805 Frequency!

There are always processors that can be overclocked more than others and if you are a Note 3 user, you are in luck as Qualcomm 800 can be easily overclocked from its stock 2.3Ghz to 2.726Ghz no problem, giving you nearly 20% boost.   And yes, overclocking it that much will give you decreased battery life but in my testing the battery life still outperformed one on Note 4 (due to 1080P instead of 1440P screen and your screen eats up most of your battery life, not CPU).

For my overclocking experiment, I wanted to get the best operating system running so I loaded the latest Android 5.0 TouchWiz firmware on my T-Mobile Note 3 and also the latest CM12 nightly on my SM-N9005, both with Leak kernel installed.

Kernel of Choice for Note 3 Overclockers – Lean Kernel!

Lean Kernel is probably the best custom kernel you can use for your Note 3 for overclocking as the developer has been around and makes some excellent kernels.  It is available for most Note 3 variants without a locked bootloader.

When I first did my benchmarking tests with Antutu fully overclocked to 2.726Ghz, I actually didn’t get better results.  In fact, my scores were lower than stock at times.  There’s one little change I made a big difference.  I knew from my experiences overclocking Litecoin rigs (for making crypto-currency) that sometimes you can undervolt your highest frequencies to bring the temperature down.  I did exactly that, turned voltage at 2.726Ghz from 1170 to 1140.  And the results were amazing, I was finally able to break through 48K on Antutu benchmarks!  (My stock Note 4 on KitKat did 46K on Antutu.)

Is it stable enough?

Yes, I’ve run the benchmarks for about 10 times straight, my phone got super hot but no reboots, nothing!

So, if you do want to supercharge your Note 3, definitely give the Lean kernel a try and do let me know what is the highest Antutu benchmark scores you were able to get!  Or if you were able to use another kernel, let me know what kernel/settings you used.

Note – To get the correct benchmarks scores, make sure your phone cools down all the way before running Antutu.  Running them one after another will cause your CPU to get hot and your results may be hindered.

How to Install Lean kernel?

You can install Lean kernel of the following Note 3 running Android 5.0 Lollipop.

For my experiment, I used stock T-Mobile Lollipop firmware but you can use any Lollipop TouchWiz ROM.  For CM12, grab the latest nightlies here.

Download Lean Kernel for TouchWiz Lollipop – SM-N9005, T-Mobile SM-N900T, Canadian SM-N900W8 (These are the versions I used since performance may be different on other versions, try this one first then if you get it working, get the latest version here.)  This can be installed on any Note 3 running latest Lollipop TouchWiz ROM/stock ROM.

Download Lean Kernel for AOSP/CM12 Lollipop – SM-N9005, T-Mobile SM-N900T, Sprint SM-N900P, Canadian SM-N900W8 (These are the versions I used since performance may be different on other versions, try this one first then if you get it working, get the latest version here.) This can be installed on any Note 3 running latest Lollipop CM12/AOSP ROM.

Before you install the kernel, make sure you backup boot image (which is the kernel) in TWRP Recovery. (I highly recommend TWRP Recovery as it allows you to do make backup of your kernel only and not the whole ROM, if you are on CWM, you can use Flashify to install TWRP easily.)  This way, if something goes wrong, you can quickly restore your boot image (kernel) and restore you phone.

Still waiting for official Lollipop on your Sprint Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900P?  Well, you may have to wait couple more months but if you don’t like waiting, you can go ahead and grab Sacs Android 5.0 Lollipop ROM!

Based on SM-N9005 international Note 3 Lollipop, Sacs Android 5.0 Lollipop ROM is a ported ROM with everything working out of the box!  Yes, you get all of the new Lollipop features right on your Sprint Note 3 without having to wait for Sprint to update.

Best part?  This ROM has no Sprint bloatware to slow you down and it’s fast.  You will also be able to finally enjoy Note 4 features like floating multi-windows (that you can make any apps into floating window), floating messages, Ultra Power Saving Mode, Download Booster, and much much more.

So, definitely give this guy a try this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

Looking for a super-fast and stable Android 5.1.1 AOSP ROM with root? (What is AOSP?)  Then check out latest Temasek CM12.1 ROM.

Based on latest CM12.1 Android 5.1.1 sources, the Temasek CM12.1 ROM aims to bring you speed, performance, and optimization to your Note 3.  Believe me, if you want to convert your Galaxy Note 3 into a super Nexus device, this is the ROM to be on “right now”.

With this ROM, you will be able to enjoy all of latest Lollipop CyanogenMod features like AudioFX app, CM themes while Temasek Spare Parts (in Settingss) will allow to do cool stuff like add App Circle Bar/Gesture Anywhere shortcuts, enable/disable Heads up notifications, change DPI, customize lockscreen/system animations, and much much more.

Whether you need to add screenshot or screen recording to the Power menu, change recents menu, block ads, or even change your button shortcuts, you can do it all easily with Dirty Tweaks.

Can’t wait to try out the new features on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge on your Galaxy Note 3?   Well, we have good news for you as you can install DarkLord S6 ROM on your Note 3 and essentially get all of the software features of S6 Edge!

Based on S6 Edge firmware, the DarkLord S6 ROM is a TouchWiz-based Android 5.0.2 Lollipop custom ROM that gives you all of the latest S6 features like new TouchWiz theme engine, S6 floating messages, S6 Smart Manager, S6 launcher, S6 dialer/contacts, and much much more.  In fact, there’s even menu for People Edge and Edge lighting but they won’t work since the Note 3 does not have an edge screen.

Of course the best part?  You can get the S6 Edge camera on your Note 3, which allows you to try out some of the new camera features of S6 and S6 Edge.  Not everything is working though so be aware but you can also switch back to the Note 3 camera by using AROMA installer if you have problems.  For taking basic photos and videos, it seems to be working fine although I had hard time getting manual focus mode in Pro mode.

Other than that, the ROM itself has pretty good performance and battery life, comparable to a Note 3 stock Lollipop ROM.  If you like trying new things and want to have the S6 Edge features, definitely take this guy for a test drive this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

If you want to keep your root and have cool features like unlocked hotspot/call recording, you may want to install the latest Jasmine Lollipop ROM.  For those of you coming from KitKat ROM with root, this is the best route so you don’t lose root permanently along with your unlocked WiFi hotspot.

I’ve been guilty of running KitKat on my Verizon Note 3 for a few too many months and finally upgraded with the Jasmine ROM.  Performance seems much better than KitKat (you should get around 20-25% boost) along with pretty good battery life.  Other than that, you also get new features like floating multi-window (like Note 4) and couple new Lollipop features.

If you have been putting the Lollipop upgrade, definitely check it out this week(end) or the next time you have some free time as I have a full tutorial guide (see latter part of video).

For this week’s ROM of the Week, check out Tesla ROM for Galaxy Note 3.

Based on Android 5.1.1 AOSP (What is AOSP?), Tesla ROM by Team Validus brings you years of experience and solid open source development to their latest Tesla ROM.  Tesla ROM shares a lot of roots with Slim ROMs and it comes with stuff like Slim launcher (which I really love) along with full floating multi-window support (enable Slim Recents in Settings).

As far as customization, you will be able to customize your phone easily through the Tesla Coil menu that includes tweaks for your quick settings, status bar, navigation bar (hardware/soft buttons, PIE Control, Power menu), recents button, and much much more.

Of course, best part about Tesla ROM is that it comes with support for overclocking out of the box (I recommend 2.726Ghz) via its custom kernel.  I was able to overclock it find to 2.726Ghz for many hours no problem and even ran a bunch of Antutu tests on it.  If you want to get your Note 3 to run just as fast as Note 4, this may be the closest solution without buying a new phone.

Overall, this is an excellent AOSP ROM that will convert your aging Note 3 into a Nexus beast with lots of customization and overclocking to the fullest so definitely give it a go and let me know what you think!

Note 5 was released not too long ago and we are starting to see some of the new Note 5 features rolling into Note 3 custom ROMs.  While the Note 5 Air Command still needs some time to port over to Note 3, you can still enjoy many of the new Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus features through the Norma ROM.

This ROM can be installed on many Note 3 models including the SM-N9005, SM-N9006, SM-N9008, Japanese/Korean Note 3, Sprint SM-N900P, and T-Mobile SM-N900T/Canadian SM-N900W8.  Note NFC is broke for T-Mobile and Canadian but otherwise everything else works fine.

Based on latest Android 5.0.2, Norma ROM brings you goodies like People Edge and Apps Edge and edge screen functionality just like on the new S6 Edge Plus.  Not only that, you will also be able to enjoy the Galaxy S6 camera right on your Note 3 along with double-press home shortcut, just like a Note 5/S6 Edge Plus/S6.  You will find the latest Note 5 icons along with ability to change your grid size and also 100% access to Samsung TouchWiz theme store.

Other nifty features include slight customization of UI through Norma settings in Settings menu along with Viper4Android.

While we wait for a complete port from Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus, this is as best as it gets so definitely give it a go this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

Can’t afford a Note 5?  Perhaps you don’t like the fact that Note 5 no longer has microSD slot and removable battery?

No worries, you can easily convert your Galaxy Note 3 into a Note 5 using the DarkLord N5 ROM.

Based on latest Android 5.1.1 Note 5 firmware, the DarkLord N5 ROM brings you all the features of Note 5 plus much much more.  Inside, you will find everything you can do on the Note 5 including themes, settings, UI, etc…etc…  For S-Pen, you will be able to enjoy all of the new Note 5 features along with screen-off memo that works flawless.  Essentially, the DarkLord N5 ROM makes your Note 3 better than Note 5 with support for IR blaster, multi-window for any apps, People Edge/App Edge from S6 Edge Plus, and more.

Performance is decent on its stock kernel with excellent battery life, probably much better than on a real Note 5.  With custom kernel, you should also be able to improve the performance quite a bit, I should have an update on that also.

Overall, if you want to convert your Note 3 into Note 5, the DarkLord N5 ROM will do just that.  Of course, you won’t be able to get any feature on the Note 5 that requires Note 5 hardware such as the fingerprint sensor but otherwise it’s simply amazing.  So, definitely give this guy a go this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

For those of  you looking for Android 6.0 Marshmallow and root for your Galaxy Note 3, we finally have a beta version of CM13!

Now, this is still WIP (Work in Progress) as almost everything is working except phone calls, the ROM does NOT recognize SIM cards.   But if you want to try all of the Android 6.0 Marshmallow features, you can easily make a backup ROM of your current ROM, try out the ROM, then revert back to your working ROM.

This CM13 beta version actually runs very smooth, fast and you will be able to experience latest Android 6.0 features like new DOZE feature that will extend the battery when you are not using your phone, advanced permissions control for apps, dedicated memory settings, and much more.

Overall, I would say stable versions are not too far away and if you want to try out Android 6.0 Marshmallow on your Note 3, just flash away and do let me know what you think!

For those of you who want to get ahead with Android operating system on your Galaxy Note 3, you need to check out the latest Resurrection Remix ROM with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

Based on latest Android 6.0.1, Resurrection Remix ROM brings you the best of CM13 and customization. In fact, this is the BEST Android Marshmallow custom ROM I have tried so far.

Out of the box, you will get all of the latest Android Marshmallow features along with CM13 features like AudioFX, CM themes (compatible with all CM13 themes), and more.

If you have been following Resurrection Remix ROM with previous Lollipop versions, you will know the high number of customization you get with it. Inside Settings->Configurations, you will be able to fully customize your status bar, buttons, recents, notification drawer, lockscreen, and more. For navigation, you will be able to add stuff like App Circle Bar, Gestures, and PIE controls.

For your quick toggles/tiles, Resurrection Remix features two columns of tiles that you can edit easily using the “Edit Tiles” button. Of course, don’t forget that with Android 6.0 you can turn your microSD card into internal storage, which works flawless on this ROM. I was able to turn my 32GB Note 3 into 96GB Note 3 easily by adding a 64GB microSD card.

Lastly but not least, the ROM features root enabled out of the box along with Kernel Auditor that allows you to overclock your phone easily to 3Ghz. (But I actually recommend not overclocking as the ROM is fast as it is.)

If you are jealous of your friends who have recently bought a brand, new Galaxy S7 Edge, you don’t have to be anymore as there’s a way to convert your Galaxy Note 3 into S7 Edge and also have Note 5 features.

Samsung has also stopped supporting Note 3 and since there’s no official TouchWiz Marshmallow updates (yet), this will also give you the latest Android 6.0.1 running on your Note 3.

To do this, there are various different ROMs you can use but I found DarkWolf ROM to be the best so far that I have tried.  Based on latest S7 Edge SM-G935F firmware, the DarkWolf ROM brings you all of the software features of Galaxy S7 Edge to your Note 3 including Edge screen panels, S7 Edge apps, Always On screen(yes it works!!!), Game Launcher (so you can record games while you play), and even S7 Edge camera!

Now, this ROM isn’t perfect as NFC does not work but it is still usable as daily driver since voice calls work well and everything else pretty much works out of the box.

Want Note 4 and Galaxy S6 features on your Galaxy Note 3?  Check out the latest Aurora ROM.

Based on Android 5.0.1 TouchWiz Lollipop ROM, the Aurora ROM brings you a hybrid experience of Note 4 and Galaxy S6.  For launcher, you will get a Galaxy S6 launcher with Theme Engine just like you would get on a real Galaxy S6 and enjoy stuff like the Avengers theme.

The ROM comes with many S6 features like S6 weather widget, dialer with call recording, music player, voice recorder, S Health, calendar, and more.  You get the idea, you will be able to cosmetically turn your Note 3 into a Galaxy S6, sorta.

Other than that, this is a pretty solid ROM so definitely give it a test drive this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

Can’t wait to try out the new features on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge on your Galaxy Note 3?   Well, we have good news for you as you can install DarkLord S6 ROM on your Note 3 and essentially get all of the software features of S6 Edge!

Based on S6 Edge firmware, the DarkLord S6 ROM is a TouchWiz-based Android 5.0.2 Lollipop custom ROM that gives you all of the latest S6 features like new TouchWiz theme engine, S6 floating messages, S6 Smart Manager, S6 launcher, S6 dialer/contacts, and much much more.  In fact, there’s even menu for People Edge and Edge lighting but they won’t work since the Note 3 does not have an edge screen.

Of course the best part?  You can get the S6 Edge camera on your Note 3, which allows you to try out some of the new camera features of S6 and S6 Edge.  Not everything is working though so be aware but you can also switch back to the Note 3 camera by using AROMA installer if you have problems.  For taking basic photos and videos, it seems to be working fine although I had hard time getting manual focus mode in Pro mode.

For those of you having trouble converting your Galaxy Note 3 into a full-fledge Avengers S7 Edge, it’s actually easy to do, you may have to erase files under “trialjson” directory while installing the Avengers theme.

The Avenegers themes are fully compatible with DarkWolf ROM for the Note 3 (or probably any other S7 Edge port ROM) and if you add some Avengers boot animations to go with it, you will have a fully-converted Avengers Edition Galaxy S7 Edge.   Performance is excellent along with Screen Off Memo and full set of features from Note 5.  This is a really S7 Edge/Note 5 hybrid ROM that will give your Note 3 new life along with support for Always-On-Screen(which is a bit dim but still works).

Overall, this is a fun way to really take your Note 3 to the next level with all of Samsung’s latest features instead of being stuck in Neverland.

The tutorials are pretty much the same as before but in case you may have forgot, here’s the steps again:

Step 1. Install DarkWolf ROM for your Galaxy Note 3. (If you are on older V2.0, also update to the latest V8.5)

Step 2. Install Avengers theme and boot animation of your choice. (Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, etc…etc…)

For those of you who have a Galaxy Note 3 but don’t want to deal with Note 7’s blowing up features, you may be in luck as there’s a Note 7 ROM that you can install that gives you all the software features of a real Note 7.

Now, this will require you to root your Galaxy Note 3 and also install a custom ROM called DarkLord ROM. For those of you not rooted yet, simply follow our root instructions over at GalaxyNote3Root.com to root your phone then install the ROM. We will have full ROM installation instructions at the end of this video.

I’ve tested this ROM working fine on my international SM-N9005 Note 3 and also my T-Mobile SM-N900T. It should also work on Canadian and supposedly works on other variants but I have not tested them all out yet.

Let me talk about the features of the DarkLord ROM. First, this is a fully ported ROM from a real Note 7 so you will find all of the Note 7 UI including new wallpapers and themes. Inside settings, you will find the new Note 7 Settings UI, which is the latest Samsung UI you will have to get used to.
